Economic Empowerment

The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Southern Maryland Chapter was chartered in 2023 with a mandate to implement our national initiative, Sister-Nomic$™, which aims to improve financial outcomes for Black women, and girls.  We identify and support policies, initiatives, and partner organizations that champion economic opportunities for Black women and girls and implement programs that teach fiscal responsibility, financial stability, and generational wealth building. We host events to transfer knowledge of how to build legacy wealth, leverage the benefits of homeownership, and estate planning, and become a successful entrepreneur.

 

Black women are part of the economic empowerment movement globally. According to the United Nations, "Investing in women’s economic empowerment sets a direct path towards gender equality, poverty eradication, and inclusive economic growth. Women make enormous contributions to economies, whether in businesses, on farms, as entrepreneurs or employees, or by doing unpaid care work at home. But they also remain disproportionately affected by poverty, discrimination, and exploitation. Gender discrimination means women often end up in insecure, low-wage jobs, and constitute a small minority of those in senior positions. It curtails access to economic assets such as land and loans.
